Axel left Khali with Pepper and went ahead to warn the Bennamons of what was coming, but that did little to dampen the absurd visual of Pepper strutting out of the forest followed by a horde of trees and plants that sauntered behind her like they were from a jaunty cartoon.

Pepper waved her hands with the flamboyancy of a magician as she guided the plants back to their places. Beside the main cottage, Acorn’s jaw dropped, Cinnamon looked on like she’d seen weirder things in her life, and the extended family milled around trying to figure out how much extra work this was going to create for them.

Not much, it turned out.

Pepper might have been a chaotic being, but she led the plants back into place with all the disciplined order of the Roman phalanxes their formations resembled. Soon the farm looked identical to the way it had when he and Khali had first flown in that morning, albeit missing the plants he’d blown up in the course of fighting Pepper.

Khali strode up to meet him, and Pepper strutted behind proudly as if she wasn’t the cause of this whole mess. When she reached him, she looked up with wide, doe-like eyes.

“Did I please my Wood Lord?”

Acorn and Cinnamon looked at Axel with expressions that varied between “What the fuck?” and “What the actual fuck?”

“It’s a long story,” Axel said to the Bennamons, then to Pepper, “You did.”

“Excellent. Now we mate—”

“No!” Axel replied in a commanding voice. “Later.”

Pepper looked like she wanted to throw another tantrum, but contained herself and withdrew into a submissive stance as if to say, “Yes, Master.”

“So this is the one who caused so much trouble,” Cinnamon observed. “And you used to be a Dryantian Gobbin?”

“I’m still a Dryantian Gobbin,” Pepper replied.

“But intelligent.”

Axel had expected the Bennamons to be furious at Pepper, but both of them looked at her with pensive stares, then glanced between each other in the way Axel’s parents often had, the kind of wordless communication that could only happen between long-married couples.

“To what level can you control plants?” Acorn asked. “We know you can move them. Can you make them grow faster? Can you heal blight?”

Pepper shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“She’s gained some abilities beyond that of a standard Dryantian Gobbin,” Axel explained. “We haven’t explored the depths of them yet.”

“You say that like you intend to,” Cinnamon observed.

“I can’t just leave her out in the forest. First because it would just feel wrong, and second because she can make giant mechs out of wood and I don’t trust her to keep that skill under control.”

The Bennamons’ eyes widened, but Pepper cackled.

“I’ve got an extra room in my condo,” Khali offered. “I figured we’d invite her to live with us while she gets used to not being a monster.”

She looked at Axel to ask his permission, and a pleasant smile quirked onto his face. He’d been on his way to suggesting that himself, but was waiting for the right moment since it was, after all, her house.
